Samsung Galaxy S2, iPhone
Along with the iPhone 4S, Samsung’s successor to the original Galaxy S, the Galaxy S 2, has been named one of 2011’s top phones by a variety of different websites and blogs. Originally shown off in February at Mobile World Congress, July saw sales of the smartphone rise to 5 million units worldwide as it became Apple’s main competition for the iPhone 4. International Business Times included it in their list of the year’s Top 10 Android Smartphones, whilst TechRader.com deemed it the Best Mobile Phone in the World Today.
The Daily Telegraph named the Samsung Galaxy S2 its Gadget of the Year, calling it “the most complete mobile phone on the market”. Cheaper than the iPhone yet its match in power and content, the S2 is even available for free with some contracts of £25 per month and above. According to comparison website uSwitch.com, the Samsung Galaxy S2 was the most searched for mobile phone on the internet during 2011. It has certainly played a pivotal role in building the success of Google’s Android operating system, and will receive an update to the latest version, Ice Cream Sandwich, in early 2012.
Additionally, although the iPhone 4S sold well in the UK, Australia and the US, reports show that the Galaxy S2 was actually the most popular handset in Europe, possibly due to financial issues as more and more consumers shunned the expensive Apple phone in favour of a cheaper alternative. The S2 builds on everything that Samsung got right with the original Galaxy S, bringing a more powerful processor, improved camera, smoother navigation and lag-free multitasking to an already top quality phone. With rumours of another sequel, the S3, beginning to circulate along with buzz words such as “quad core” and even “3D”, Samsung have a strong chance of dominating the smartphone market in 2012.
